All Things Apples!
Apple Cider Pressing, Canning, Preserving and Freezing, making Fruit Leather, Vinegar and Applesauce with Community presenters
Saturday Oct 3rd & Sunday Oct 4th - Come for one day or both! 10:30-4 pm.
Saturday: The apple press will be going strong! This will be a ‘many hands make light work’ day and everyone will have a chance to wash, prepare, and press apples for cider. It will be a fun (and messy!) day. Bring a bag lunch and a chair, we’ll supply dessert and of course, cider! Depending on timing, we might start cooking up some treats for Sunday.
Sunday: We’ll get down to the serious business of what to do with the leftovers (pomace) from pressing, as well as work with fresh apples. We’ll do some canning, drying (two methods) and freezing. We’ll start making vinegar, fruit leather, and sauce. We’ll discuss the science of canning and discuss different varieties of apples and their uses.
Come prepared for all weather, bring a notebook, and plan on getting dirty. Please bring your own reusable plates/cutlery/mugs, a bag lunch, and a camping chair. We’ll supply the treats!
Saturday $30 adults, $15 children under 12
Sunday $65 adults
Both days $80 adults
Please ask us about family rates. We strive to make our workshops accessible to all. Please let us know how to make it easier for you to attend.
This workshop will be held on Wolfe Island, within walking distance of the boat. Please do not bring a car unless absolutely necessary. See ‘Travelling to Wolfe Island’ below.
Travelling to Wolfe Island:
Wolfe Island is a magical place, but it can sometimes be an adventure to get on or off the island. Patience is required. Weekends are busy and the ferry can be packed. Construction at the terminal exacerbates this.
Though you may be lucky getting your car on with no trouble in one direction, it might be a different story when you go to leave. Also note, whether you are a foot or a car passenger, if there is an ambulance call, picking up the ambulance in Kingston is a priority and the boat will change direction midway in the water, with all cars on it. You will wait to pick up the ambulance in Kingston, then you will wait on the Wolfe Island side to bring the ambulance back… i.e.; you can wait for hours and not actually go anywhere.
NO REFUNDS ARE GIVEN FOR FERRY ISSUES However, if the ferry is out of service on the day of your workshop, we will do our best to reschedule. This will be at the discretion of the instructor and WISE.
All of our workshops are within walking distance of the boat. Being a foot passenger is the easiest and fastest way to get on and off the boat.
Before the date of this workshop, the ferry may be changing ( from the WI 3 to the WI 4) which may alter our start time. We will keep you posted closer to the date.
